Spurs shopping list

So the transfer window has opened and the rumour mill is in full effect. Spurs are sitting high up the table and challenging for a Champions League spot, but who do we need to bring in to push on and guarantee a top four finish?

We already have a strong squad. In most positions we have good players, at least in terms of the first eleven. We also have several big players just coming back from injury – Parker, Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto – so we will have some important new options available to us even before signing anyone. We seem pretty strong in terms of goalkeeper, centre back and defensive midfield but what positions do we need to strengthen?

  • A midfield general, maybe Moutinho. When we haven’t had Dembele in the team we have struggled, we rely on him too much. There’s been nobody to run midfield and link defense and attack. Sandro is good defensively, as is Parker. Bale, Sigurdsson and Dempsey are good going forward. However none can run a game and dominate midfield. For this reason Moutinho would be top of my list. We were close to sigining him at the end of the last transfer window. It sounds like he wanted to come and Villas-Boas knows him well; he fits AVB’s system.
  • A creative spark, maybe Wesley Sneider. Since Modric left we have lacked some guile and subtlety. We have great attacking players but their strengths mainly rely on pace and getting behind the opposition (e.g. Bale, Lennon, Defoe). When faced with teams set up to defend we struggle. Look at the game against Stoke, or the first half against Villa. Even today against Reading, in a game we totally dominated in terms of posession we were reduced to long shots for much of the game. Suggesting Sneider may be a bit optimistic but he has been out of favour at Inter. He certainly has that subtlety and the ability to pick out the killer ball.
  • A striker, maybe Fernando Llorente. We currently only have two recognised strikers in the squad. Adebayor has not seemed fully fit or in form this season. Defoe has carried us so far, but he can’t do it all on his own. Despite his natural goal scoring ability he has his limitations, notably holding the ball up or providing an option in the air. He seems particularly to struggle against the more defensive sides. Another striker is therefore a priority but this seems the most difficult problem to solve. Strikers of the level that would improve Spurs are not easy to come by, especially since Manchester City seem to have stockpiled most of the good ones. The other Fernando would fit the bill. He’s big and strong and scores lots of goals. He would complement Defoe perfectly. Unfortunately this also looks optimistic, a number of big clubs are rumoured to be after him.
  • Gareth Bale. I thought I’d add our welsh winger to this list as keeping him is one of the priorities for us this transfer window. He has been electric in recent weeks and is vital in keeping us in the fight for the Champions League places.

Spurs are in a great position and it seems like the addition of one or two players could allow us to capitalise on this. However we should only buy top quality players. The squad is good enough that we don’t need quick fixes or panic buys.

Note: This is a wish list, I don’t expect us to get all three of these signings but I can dream. Hopefully AVB and Levy have some less high profile players who could also fill these rolls up their sleeves.
